I’m so lucky to be someone’s baby, two people actually! There’s my Mother and then… I’ll let you guess who the other person is 😉
My Mom gave me this inscribed plaque today in her bid to refuel my morale 😉 and I just thought I should share it with you.

“When you believe in yourself, the possibilities are endless.”

I couldn’t agree more!

There’s nothing as wonderful as a supportive parent.
Thank you Mama dearest for being there for me 🙂

Lions without Manes…

I came across this picture today and I instantly fell in love with it. The first thing that struck me was the splendor of the roaring beast and the second, its Mane.

The lion. A magnificent creature, graceful in its sway and yet extremely fierce when provoked. The mane of the adult male lion, is one of the most distinctive characteristics of this huge feline. It makes the lion appear larger, providing an excellent intimidation display; this aids the lion during confrontations with other lions and with its chief competitors.

Useful thing, the mane.

Now tell me, what do you think of this picture? I edited it myself 😛

A girlfriend saw it displayed on a social network as my profile photo, and her first reaction towards it was “Eeewww”.

I know you don’t quite understand where I’m going with this just yet, but kindly indulge me for a few… My intention while editing this picture was to leave the lion without a mane, a shoddy job I know, gladly, my message is not in the aesthetics. Now to the point of today’s post.

We see in the first picture a lion, regal, intimidating, dangerous and yes, even beautiful. Using the second image, try imagining that roaring lion without its mane. Some may even have the same reaction as my girlfriend, but take a closer look. Does it make the lion less a “king of beasts” or its canines any less formidable? No.

If there is such a defect in male lions, then its my guess that a bald lion would be shunned and even bullied within its pride. Yet, with or without its mane it would still be revered within the animal kingdom because by its nature, it demands that respect. This is the same way we should see ourselves.

I too have experienced what its like to be different; to feel like half a babe or not one at all, to hear such remarks as “Eeewww” or even worse. I wrestled with this difference for a while…. but perhaps if I had come across the analogy drawn from these pictures at the time, I just might have sooner developed a more positive way of viewing my situation.

Like the Lion, you are not defined by the hair on your head. It may enhance your appearance, but take it off or grow it back tomorrow and you will still bear the same name, your blood group will not have changed; neither will your sex. Mane or bald, you are who and what you make of yourself. You can see yourself as strong or weak, bold or timid, beautiful or ugly, its your choice. What is most important is that just as the lion, you are as creation intended, absolutely MAGNIFICENT! So embrace it!

Look at it this way:

Hair is the icing on the cake, an aesthetic. And with that said, you can do without all that sugar because there’s already enough sweetness inside you 😉

Cheers!

Joanna Rowsell: One small step that did so much…

Today’s post has been quite a challenge as I have had to battle with an overwhelming excitement. It gives me great pleasure each time I meet women willing to strut a bald look despite the circumstance, balding or not, and then when I find public figures doing it I tend to go ga-ga. Britney Spears did it and was called nuts, but for me, crazy or not, her actions were like a fuel to my fire. Then there was Demi Moore who got a skin cut for her role in the movie “G.I Jane”

Natalie Portman in “V for Vendetta”

Finally, I would be crazy to leave out Amber Rose the American model, artist, actress, and socialite.

Joanna Rowsell was recently added to my list of heroines when at the London 2012 Olympics, she removed her helmet to reveal her almost totally bald form, after coming in first place in the women’s Team Pursuit, but that’s not all. This brave 23 year old British cyclist chose to ascend the Olympic podium, watched by a worldwide audience of 17 million to collect her medal without her wig.

Unlike the previous celebrities mentioned, Joanna was diagnosed with Alopecia areata at the age of 10 and has suffered from it for the past 13 years. However, she has amazing perspective on the issue, and though she admits to having struggled with her appearance for years, she now confidently says, “There’s part of me that thinks: ‘I’m not ill; there’s nothing wrong with me.’ Most of the time I don’t think about it.” (Excerpt from The Daily Mail)…Amazing!

With her decision not to wear a wig while accepting her medal, commentators praised her courage, while her website was inundated with messages from fellow alopecia sufferers thanking her for making such a positive statement… Joanna said in an interview “One mum wrote to say her daughter had developed alopecia and was worrying so much about it, but that now she had seen me she felt more confident about the future.” (Excerpt from The Daily Mail)

Apparently Miss Rowsell never considered the magnitude behind the consequences of her action, but hey, that’s the power of spontaneity. I for one, am grateful she took the step, and like that little girl, I’m inspired to feel even more confident about the future.

Bald, Scanty haired, or with a full crop…. It’s all good! 😉

Please Excuse Naomi

Ok, so I said I was sleepy, which I actually am but I promised myself and a blogger friend of mine that I would write about this today.

Meet Naomi Campbell. She’s a hot and sexy SUPER super-model, she’s rich and famous and according to the latest gist by the media ….she also suffers from Traction alopecia.

A friend and I were chatting after she had been on my blog and read about my ordeal when Naomi’s name came up. At some point during the conversation my friend says:

“I don’t understand why she won’t cut that thing off! She’s a model after all so her going bald will just look like a fashion statement”.

RRRRRRRrrrright! E easy like that abi? 😀 …. Well I want to tell you that its so NOT!

I still remember that faithful day of the BIG CHOP like it was a few hours ago. I walked into the first Unisex Beauty Parlor I could find that day but before that the memory of stopping by a hair accessory store to buy a wig strikes me :D, anyway back to the salon! … I approached a female worker in the ladies section of the salon and told her I wanted a hair cut, she gave me a funny look and asked whether I meant a trim and then I told her I wanted it all off. I can still remember the weird look she gave me :D… You see unlike dear Naomi, my hair loss was well hidden right smack in the middle of my supposed long and lush crop of hair. All I had to do was wear a ponytail and I was your everyday girl 😉

At first she thought I wanted a low cut but when I made it clear to her that I was going for “smooth as a baby’s butt” she paused. I actually had to undo my hair and show hair the hot mess on my head before she agreed to offer her assistance. Finally she referred me to the men’s section and told me which of the barbers would best handle my case.

I can still remember his name “Wale”. Believe it or not I had to go through the same scenario as at the female section, but being the one to handle my hair Wale felt very confident that he could find some way round cutting everything off, even when he saw the huge patch I had been hiding he would not accept defeat… What a sweet guy! 😉

The Moment of Truth! Clippers to Hair!:

Wale was sure that  a low cut and a style that would hide my problem would do the trick. However, the moment his clipper ran down the middle of my head he had no choice but to accept defeat. It was now obvious that I so needed to go bald and so looking at me through his mirror he said:

“It will be alright, don’t worry. If you are fine with a bald look I’ll take your phone number”

I laughed of course 😀

With my heart in my mouth I watched as Wale took off every strand of hair from my head and half way through he paused and looking at the reflection of my half done look he asked for my number 😀 😀 😀

It was all scary and yet very exciting. He was done and then I proceeded to bringing out my newly purchased wig, but Wale totally refused for me to wear it. He saved me that day. That look just might have become “Me” if I had stepped out of the salon that day with the wig on my head, but instead with the encouragement of Wale and the rest of the people in that room I was able to step out onto the street, and with my head held high I made my way home.

Sounds like a happy ending doesn’t it? Well that was only the beginning my dear reader, the beginning of many challenges. I battled with depression, low self-esteem and then I also had to listen to people talk good or bad about my look. It was a trrrrip!

Now lets go over my friend’s statement again shall we:

“I don’t understand why she won’t cut that thing off! ….”

Well I most certainly do! I understand  the feeling of shame, embarrassment; the fear of being seen as different, less sexy, odd or even sick … I’m not even a public icon so you might want to turn the emotional frequency up by A LOT when it comes to our super model here.

So please excuse Naomi if she’s decided she’d rather hide her receding hairline and have it show once in a while in her photo shots, and if you still have a problem with this, kindly try stepping into her shoes. Maybe then you’d know where it pinches… 😐

And here it is!…

Alopecia by Oluwaseun Aduwo

I sincerely apologies for my silence… Been focusing on a lot of things besides my hair lately.

A friend of mine saw this blog and was inspired to write a poem I thought I’d share.
Just so you know, the following was actually written by a GUY!!!!…. he’s straight mind you 😉

Enjoy!….

ALOPECIA

Finger to my lips,

perched gently.

Sunk in thoughts of a thousand worries,

Alopecia!

on my mind.

She’s conquered with no cease,

taking prisoners for no ransom fee.

Taunting and hunting our feminine’s

ripping their pride with no pleas

tearing them root for root.

Gloating over their loss

and hoping they would fall prey to her own demise.

Yes, her demise, for she knows not yet this

for the battle has been taken to

her very own doorsteps.

Scalping, the tool for retaliation set!!

Exposure to the natural burn of the earth’s guardian,

not knowing she held her self captive and graciously led herself

into the dungeon for her own denial.

Her inmates or so she thought

liberated to the world

with a difference,

set free to speak their minds

attaining boldness unheard of.

Gallant in their march

bearing a message to disperse

with the roar of a thousand notes

for they are not alone

Free your mind! They shout,

free your scalp! They beckon,

for wherein lies your beauty?

if you are not your hair.

Walk the talk

and dishonor Alopecia

for she would never be a part of you.

…..I am glad to have people of such understanding in my life….

The African Queen

“The African Queen” is what she is called
when her head is scrapped clean and bald

The African Queen
the perfect and yet ironic title for the hairless woman
who feels she has lost her mantle

The African Queen
her hairless head reflecting the suns rays
free from the stress of weaves and braids
and yet she is ashamed.

The African Queen
for in her society how is she truly seen?
Some would call her a widow, while others will say she is in mourning
Mutterers speak of the disgrace of the look she is donning
Yet they do not know and are too ignorant to see
this was not her choice nor of her own doing

The African Queen… Me
Her hair is snatched but not her pride and beauty
She finds it is within and decides to let it shine daily
Though not always easy, since she once in a while recalls
her days of long hair that made her the conventional lady

Still, I am “The African Queen”
I embrace me, and that includes my bald head along with all my being.
